CEO Corner – Autumn 2017

Welcome to the Autumn edition of RiskeBusiness. Hope you all enjoyed a relaxing festive season and that 2017 is turning out to be a year full of great success, new connections and professional and personal growth.

It’s hard to believe we are almost at the end of the first quarter for 2017 – it’s been a very busy start to the year.  Our first Exec leaders lunch was held in January where we explored ALUCA’s high level strategy and results from the recent member surveys. Thank you to all of those who attended and provided your insights.

The ALUCA pulse survey conducted at the end of last year highlighted that the key priorities and opportunities facing ALUCA members in 2017 continue to be complex and varied. Life insurance and re-insurance companies and their employees in Australia face an uncertain and changing regulatory environment, media, consumer and regulatory scrutiny and a bumpy business environment . The key insights gained from this research was extremely valuable in helping us better understand what members want and value and the key challenges members are facing with the Life Insurance code of practice high on everybody’s list. You can read the top level results from this research in this edition of ReB.

We reviewed this research in detail at ALUCA’s planning day held last month . ALUCA’s Board, subgroup chairs, Secretariat Officer and myself convened to formulate and review ALUCA’s  strategic goals around our 5 strategic pillars and developed priorities for the coming year.  This was a very valuable day that generated great discussions, ideas and activities. It was humbling to be part of such vibrant discussions with such passionate people all aligned to delivering a powerful member and stakeholder value proposition.

There was a lot of work that went into and came out of the day.  I am proud to report that many key projects are already  underway which include:

  • Updating and refreshing the existing website for launch later in the year
  • Reviewing ALUCA’s current accreditation and CPD program with a best practice Underwriting and Claims capabilities framework to increase the professionalism of underwriters and claims assessors
  • Launching an Exec Leaders Forum with our first lunch event held in January and a special invitation-only event for the most senior Underwriter and Claims Heads to be held in Sydney on May 22nd
  • Launching ALUCA’s Roadshow – our first was held last month at ANZ/OnePath
  • Exploring webinars and video content for our overseas and regional members
  • Refreshing ALUCA’s social media
  • Forging greater links with other industry bodies both here and overseas

These initiatives are just a few of the many ways we support our members and stakeholders. You will see that we have a strong line up of state seminars for this last quarter and a full program for the rest of the year. It was great to meet many of you at the CMG legal insights triple seminar in Sydney.

This is a brave new world we are operating in and I was heartened by the wisdom and insights that Andrew Gill, CEO of PacificLife Re shared with me in his interview that you can read more of in this edition of ReB.

2017 is an important milestone for the Life Insurance industry. It truly is a historic time for our industry, and as Andrew Gill said it’s an exciting time to be in Life Insurance.

All the very best,

Amanda McKernan
