The ALUCA Turks Legal scholarship award is now in its 11th year. The winners were announced at the ALUCA NSW Professional Development Day in October with the 3 finalists being provided a complimentary place by ALUCA to attend that event and receive their awards in person. Many thanks to Turks Legal and to everyone involved, including all of the industry judges and entrants. Congratulations to all who submitted a paper. There was a great cross selection of entries and the judges commented on the high quality of papers submitted
Jennifer Jackson, Rehabilitation Consultant, CommInsure, was the winner for her outstanding essay on genetic testing. In her thoughtful and well researched paper, Jennifer highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of the Australian life insurance industry’s current approach to this issue, how other comparable countries are choosing to handle this issue and provided well researched recommendations on how we as an industry should respond. You can read her full paper in this edition of RiskeBusiness. As the winner Jennifer won an overseas conference package valued up to AU$8,000 including return travel, accommodation and $1,000 cash.
The 1st place runner up was Carola Moore, Claims L & D Manager,AMP, for her paper on ‘Getting Capabilities Right’. She won an AU$1,000 Visa pre-paid gift card
The 2nd place runner up was Amanda Cruikshank, Rehabilitation Consultant , AIA, for her paper on ‘Bringing the Benefits of Return to Work Philosophy to Superannuation’
She won an AU$250 restaurant voucher

2017 ALUCA MONASH MLC Scholarship winner
The ALUCA- MLC-Monash award winners were announced at a special presentation night at MLC’s offices in Melbourne. This special award recognises final year Monash University allied health student talent and the crucial role that allied health students play in the life insurance industry. It also aims to promote careers in the Life Insurance claims and underwriting professions.
Students who were chosen to participate this year were partnered with a senior claims or underwriting leader from MLC to mentor and help guide them. The selected students were all required to submit a 2000 word essay on one selected topic from a list of key questions facing underwriting and claims professionals today. In addition they had to prepare a five minute presentation to ALUCA Board members, MLC Life Insurance senior leaders and Monash University Allied Health professors. This had to include a PPT presentation to support key findings. At the final presentation night in October the students had to make their five minute presentation on their response to their assigned topic to the judges and audience and the final winner and 1st runner up were announced on the night.
Thank you to everyone involved, including the judges from MLC, Monash and ALUCA and all of the entrants. Congratulations to all of the students who were finalists and submitted a paper. Every finalist received $500. There was a great cross selection of entries and the judges commented on the depth and quality of papers submitted and the strong oral presentations they each provided.
Devorah Reisenberg won the top prize of $2,000 for the best submission plus an opportunity to intern at MLC and the runner up was Thomas Phillips who won $1,000. Our congratulations to them both.
In the meantime don’t forget ALUCA has now opened up nominations for the inaugural ALUCA Life Insurance Excellence awards with 6 individual categories and 4 team categories. The winners will be announced next May 24th.
